The church
One of the most photographed churches in the world is a complex of five churches. Four churches are the basis of the building with a fifth rests like a dome. This of course is itself known as Panagia Paraportiani church. The four churches of the base is St. Eustatius, Saints Anargyroi, which is the oldest of all and is said to have been built at the end of the 14th or early 15th century and completed in its present form in the 17th century, Saint Sozon and small church of St. Anastasia.
The St. Eustatius church is the center of the cluster database. The church took its name from the fact that it is located near the small gate, the "paraporti" the wall of the country's medieval castle.
Probably successively built in the 16th-17th century, although some believe that it may be built earlier.
In its original form, the church was only the temple upstairs while today closed narthex of St. Eustatius on the ground floor was the paraporti Castle. The churches of St. Eustatius, St. Savior and St. Anastasia stood at just 1920 temples.
Probably both low and loud arcs have underpinned the arch of the roof if they were in the past supports a more heavy construction maybe a tower of the castle.
THE CHURCH OF PARAPORTIANIS
H Paraportiani is a unique remarkable architectural complex, the creation of which contributed not only man, but also the time that the accidental damage caused, established a final result of unparalleled beauty.
The "Paraportiani" got its name from the fact that it is next to the small NW gate, "the paraporti" of the medieval wall of Mykonos. In fact storey complex is five (5) churches, where four of them are on the ground floor and one elevated. It is this church that bears the name of Panagia Paraportiani. Created initially in the period between the 16th and 17th century architecture of its uniqueness, have highlighted important monument not only for Mykonos, but also for the entire Aegean. It is, certainly, one of the most photographed sights in Greece.
More specifically the complex Paraportiani includes, as mentioned above five small churches arranged in a complex form of two-storey building - Product development uses a singular old building within a few centuries.
Located on the west side of the (rectangular) Castle of Mykonos. It was originally a rectangular central tower and crowns in a part of the one of the exits of the medieval fortress on the rocky coast.
The output is the "Paraporti" is a "make" (sheltered by building road) that passes beneath the Virgin Mary, the church that is the floor and side / parallel to the ground churches: St. Savior, of St. Anargyroi with two powerful arcs inside the supporting significant superstructure of the tower and the Saint Anastasia ,. The three are the western facade / part of the complex and St. Eustatius is located within the same plane and adjacent to the katastegia.
The well-aisled church floor that is crowned with a dome and it has two powerful arches on the northern and southern side.
At the eastern facade crowned by a small belfry arch, which completes the plastic unique "chronogenes" and man complex, remarkable relic of medieval architecture of Cycladic castles (cell system).
